Urban Homestead 1.0

Sexiest pot belly ever

Since this is the first year we’ve been serious about our wee urban homestead, it seems like a good idea to map out a few reasonable goals for 2013. There is much to be done, but hubby and I both work and have family obligations, so I want to be realistic about what can be accomplished without going cuckoo. At the end of the day, the whole point is to slow down and have a good time. So here goes:

  • Finish the new shed interior so we can turn our existing storage room into a potting shed
  • Build a sun-powered dehydrator for use on the deck
  • Map out a succession garden plan for the raised beds so we can have veggies all year long
  • Build cold frames for the raised beds
  • Look into the feasibility of installing a wood stove in the house
  • Fence the future orchard and plant cover crops this spring to prepare for autumn’s tree planting
  • Figure out how in the world to keep root veggies over the winter when we have no basement, rock-hard clay soil outside, and no storage in the house
  • Grow several varieties of native flowers and herbs to plant on the eroding bank in the front yard
What are your goals for the year, especially you dirt lovers out there? If you’ve already accomplished some of these tasks and have words of wisdom to share, we’d love to hear your thoughts. Happy new year, interwebs.
