The juicing craze has completely eluded me. Liquid meals are way too reminiscent of Soylent Green for my taste. And the pictures of broccoli or kale shakes always look like this.
But the first installment of our fall CSA included radish greens, turnip greens, mizuna, arugula, and kale. Don’t get me wrong — I’m not complaining. After last week’s starchathon, fresh leafy things are a welcome sight, but I’m running out of ways to prepare them.
With a freezer full of local strawberries, we decided to give breakfast smoothies a shot.
Into a blender went:
- 1 cup strawberries, thawed
- 1 cup kale leaves, stems discarded
- 1/2 cup milk
- honey to taste
- 1/2 cup ice
Out came a full glass of delicious green goo that only tasted of strawberries and honey. If the color were anything else, you’d never even suspect kale as an ingredient.
It was so easy and filling, we’ll definitely be adding this to the brekkie rotation. What other smoothie variations should we try?
