Root bound and down

When friends Chris and Jenny gave us a loquat for the orchard, it was living in a tiny temporary container. But after a few weeks of confinement, its malaise couldn’t be ignored — leaves turned yellow and no amount of water could keep it from drying out. The time had come for roomier digs.

Pulling that sucker out of the pot revealed impressive root binding. I loosened those constricted tentacles and replanted the tree in a well-drained soil mix, where it should be happy until moving day in November.
