Everything about summer in the South is enticing. The lush green of the landscape, the hum of the cicadas, even the sultry, hot air that forces you to slow down a bit. Makes you experience life with all five senses in overdrive, whether you want to or not.
Nothing brings that point home like the rapid succession of fruit we enjoy every year from April to October. First strawberries, then blueberries, peaches, pears, figs, and persimmons. It’s a technicolor rainbow of edible joy.
Peaches are now in season, and I could smell them all the way from Backyard Orchards in nearby Pittsview, Alabama. So with a four-day holiday weekend coming up that’s perfect for a canning binge, I drove to the farm after work for a bushel — fifty pounds — to turn into jam and preserves.
