For Brad’s birthday one year, I surprised him with a blackberry bush, wanting to give something that would bring happiness long after the day had passed. Those vines live beneath a dogwood planted the winter following our wedding, so after the tree’s spring anniversary gift of flowers, we’re rewarded with summer fruit year after year.
Kind of a nice visual metaphor of our life.
Friends Chris and Jenny recently shared a stack of blackberry canes from their farm, and we’ve placed them alongside the house. Can’t believe those transplants have already rooted and are fruiting in their first season.
Here on out, a harvest of blackberries will remind us of good friends and thoughtful gifts. Now that’s putting the “home” in “homesteading.”
